A Boys & Girls Club denied sick pay after an employee was put on COVID-19 quarantine

An employee of the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County got $1,040 in back pay after the U.S. Department of Labor determined the agency violated federal coronavirus sick pay law.

A doctor said the worker should be quarantined at home. Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, the worker was entitled to emergency sick pay leave. Labor said the Boys & Girls Club refused that pay until Wage and Hour Division investigators informed the agency of the COVID-19 sick pay rules.

“We encourage employers and employees to contact us to learn about their rights and responsibilities under this new law,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Tony Pham said. “We offer many online tools to help employers avoid violations like those found in this investigation.”
