Pieces of a Florida bridge fell onto the highway. The state says it won’t collapse

Stuart Police Department

The Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart has been shut down after a large crack was found and portions of concrete fell onto the highway.

In a news conference Wednesday, Stuart Mayor Mike Meier said during a routine inspection of the bridge every two years by the Florida Department of Transportation, a report was made of some falling concrete from the bridge. Stuart is about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach.

The FDOT told Meier that the falling concrete exposed rust on cables in the bridge’s structure. In an abundance of caution, the Roosevelt Bridge and North Dixie Highway were closed “so we don’t have any death or injury to any of residents or visitors,” Meier said. The FDOT said the bridge was “not at risk of imminent collapse.”

On Wednesday morning, the Coast Guard established a safety zone, stopping any maritime traffic from going under the Roosevelt Bridge. It is still closed to cars.

Meier said boat and train traffic was allowed as of Wednesday afternoon.
