The officer charged with killing George Floyd has a home in Florida. Now, it’s vandalized
Chauvin, who was arrested Friday, was reportedly not at the Florida home at the time of the protests. Two women vandalized the Florida home of the former Minneapolis police officer who is charged with George Floyd’s murder, deputies say.
Katelin Benoit, 18, and Kimberly Guzman, 20, were arrested Friday on criminal mischief charges after throwing paint on the front door of Derek Chauvin’s home, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Chauvin, who video footage captured driving his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, wasn’t at his Central Florida home at the time of the vandalism.
He and three Minneapolis officers were fired for their role in Floyd’s death. Chauvin was arrested Friday on third-degree murder and manslaughter charges. The other three have yet to be charged.
Thousands of people across the country have taken to the streets in the days following Floyd’s death to protest police brutality, racial injustice and demand criminal justice reform. The demonstrations have led to countless arrests, curfews, even the threat of military action.
Deputies responsible for policing one of the protests spotted Benoit and Guzman tossing the paint just before 4 p.m. Friday, according to the arrest report. The two then attended the demonstration and were pulled over while leaving.
During the traffic stop, a deputy noticed the paint cans on the floor. Guzman even had dried paint on her leg, the report says.
Benoit and Guzman were taken to Orange County Jail, where they later posted their $250 and $500 bonds, respectively.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside of Chauvin’s home in Windermere, Florida, on the same day of the vandalism, WFTV reported, but it’s unclear if that was the protest Benoit and Guzman were at.
