The dog was known to mess with her chickens, cops say, so she used a crossbow to get even

A Florida woman is accused of shooting a dog in the head with a crossbow.

Carey Marie Wilson, 37, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony animal cruelty, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

An anonymous tip about the May 16 incident led deputies and Nassau County Animal Control to Wilson’s home on Wednesday evening.

Wilson told investigators “she was tired of lying” and admitted to firing the 16-inch arrow, according to her arrest report. She said the dog had a history of trying to kill her chickens yet investigators discovered he wasn’t being aggressive at the time of the shooting — he was peeing on a car tire in her yard.

Deputies took Wilson to the Nassau County Jail later that night. Court records show she was released on her own recognizance Thursday morning.

The dog, who deputies described as a male yellow Labrador between 2 and 5, survived the encounter with the help of Animal Control’s veterinary care.

Nassau County Animal Services nicknamed the dog “Unicorn” and has provided updates of the canine’s condition on its Facebook page. Their latest post, dated Wednesday evening, said he’ll soon be available for foster care following his “wonderful recovery.”
