A Florida man shot a 3-year-old dog that took to the woods and a canal to escape, cops say.
Derrick Vasquez, 34, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of causing cruelty/pain and suffering to an animal a little more than a month after an Aug. 15 call to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office about a dog-shooting in Lehigh Acres.
When they arrived, the sheriff’s office said, deputies found a dog taking cover in nearby woods.
“A resident indicated that he observed the wounded dog swimming across a canal, behind his home, trying to flee from the shooter,” said LCSO, who was told the shooter was a man between 25 and 35.
After relaxing the dog, which took a little time, deputies got the pooch to limp out to them. They got her to Lee County Domestic Animal Services who took care of her wounds. She is now with Big Hearts for Big Dogs Rescue, which named her “Seven.”
Meanwhile, the investigation proceeded until it stopped at Vasquez’s front door. He was arrested at his Lehigh Acres home on Tuesday.
“This incident kept me up at night and I couldn’t be happier knowing that this individual is in jail where he belongs,” Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said.
