A Florida mother ran an errand Thursday afternoon and left her 16-year-old daughter in charge of a 4-year-old. When she returned home, Port St. Lucie police said, she learned that her older daughter had found the little girl facedown in the master bedroom bathtub.

Police and St. Lucie fire rescue crews were called out to the home around 12:40 p.m. after the 16-year-old called 911. She began CPR while waiting for help to arrive.

The 4-year-old was taken to Tradition Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said.

Port St. Lucie police detectives, who are still investigating the drowning, haven’t released any names.

“Poor thing. It literally only takes about a second for these things to happen. I hope she will be able to forgive herself,” a reader said in response to the police department’s post on Facebook.
