A Florida Department of Corrections officer was arrested by Miami-Dade police and charged with sexual battery on Friday, authorities said.

“The actions of this officer are absolutely intolerable,” FDC spokeswoman Michelle Glady said in a statement. She said FDC contacted police after the allegation was made and was taking steps to terminate the officer’s employment. FDC also removed the officer from any contact with inmates, she wrote.

WPLG Local 10 News identified the officer as Trevor Hampton, reporting that the crime against a female inmate occurred in a closet at the Miami-Dade County Women’s Detention Center.

Miami-Dade police are leading a criminal investigation and FDC is conducting a separate adminstrative investigation into the officer, Glady said.

In its series investigating Florida prisons, called Beyond Punishment, the Miami Herald revealed corruption, sexual abuse and medical neglect at the largest women’s prison in the nation, Lowell Correctional in Ocala in central Florida.
