Arsenic causes a Florida company’s 25-state recall of Walmart’s Great Value juice

The Great Value juice recall Walmart announced Monday via its website was made 10 days ago by the Florida company that makes the juice for the big box colossus.

Here’s what to know about the recall that touches 25 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico:

What’s recalled?

About 9,535 cases of Great Value Apple Juice in 8-ounce plastic bottles, sold in six-packs with UPC No. UPC 0-78742-29655-5, have been recalled. The best by date is Dec. 28, 2024.

The juice was sold in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Why is it recalled?

The FDA limits of inoraganic arsenic in apple juice, as stated in a guidance document posted to the website in June 2023, is 10 parts per billion. This juice measured 13.2 parts per billion.

Why is the public just hearing about this now?

According to the FDA Enforcement Report, Tampa’s Refresco Beverages recalled the Great Value juice on Aug. 15, but made no press release or posting to social media. Refresco notified Walmart by letter. Walmart didn’t post the recall, either.

But when the FDA classified this previously unclassfied recall as a Class II recall — “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote” — it made Saturday’s FDA email of enforcement reports.

On Monday, Walmart posted the recall to its site with a link to the enforcement report and a 46-page PDF of stores that might have received the recalled juice.

What should you do now?

Return any recalled juice to Walmart for a refund.
