Recalls

Here’s why pickled cabbage has been recalled from Florida, Texas and California stores

A possible lethal labeling mistake caused about 1,120 cases of pickled Napa cabbage to be recalled from grocery chains in Florida, Texas and California.

World Variety Produce says the 14-ounce jars of Melissa’s Kimchi Hot in those cases didn’t list fish among the ingredients as an allergen. People with food allergies check ingredient lists as if their life depends on it, because their life might very well depend on it. So, the failure to list fish creates a danger for those with a fish allergy.

As the recall notice states: “Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock.”

Lot Nos. 48528201, 48858701, 49003901 & 49003901-W0 were recalled from Florida’s Sun International stores, Texas’ Brookshire Brothers stores and California’s OK Produce-Grocery Outlet stores. They were sold from Dec. 15 through Thursday.

If there’s no chance someone with a fish allergy will eat the pickled cabbage, carry on as usual. If there is a chance, return the jar or jars to the store for a refund.
