Collard greens got recalled from the largest U.S. supermarket chain on listeria concerns

Bagged collard greens sold under the store brand of Kroger, the nation’s largest supermarket chain and No. 4 grocery seller, have been recalled because they might be contaminated with listeria.

What’s Kroger product is recalled and why?

Manufacturer Baker Farms recalled Kroger Collard Greens sold in 16-ounce bags with a best by date of 10-16-2023, production code No. 110093-387 and UPC code No. 11110-18171.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture tested some of the bagged greens and found listeria.

Which Kroger stores are affected?

According to the Baker Farms recall notice, the collard greens went to all Kroger stores in Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee got the greens, as well as some stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Kroger’s Florida warehouses used as a base for home delivery aren’t affected.

How deadly is listeria?

About 260 deaths occur among the 1,600 Americans who get listeria each year (16.5%), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but the death percentage drops to 5% when considering only people who aren’t pregnant.

Clearly, the most vulnerable to the worst consequences of listeria are pregnant women, newborn children, people over 65 and people with damaged immune systems. Other folks are more likely to deal with fever, headaches, muscle stiffness, possibly seizures, poor balance and confusion.

What should you do if you have these collard greens?

Don’t eat the bagged collard greens. Throw them in the garbage or return them to the store for a refund.
