Another reason to avoid gas station burritos — 24,000 under recall, may have listeria
If you needed a reason to make a convenience store dining choice other than burritos, Don Miguel Foods gave you one by recalling about 10,642 pounds of frozen Don Miguel Hand Made Burritos, Carne Asada flavor.
The burritos might have listeria.
“Listeria” is short for “Listeria monocytogenes,” which can sicken you when you consume contaminated food. The CDC says listeria infects only about 1,600 Americans a year, making it rare compared to other foodborne illnesses. But listeria also kills about 260 people per year, usually senior citizens and those with hampered immune systems. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths.
The USDA posted recall notice says Don Miguel’s testing turned up the listeria possibility, and the company knew some of the affected 24,000 burritos had made it to store freezers.
These burritos are 7 ounces with date code D23270. The establishment number on the packaging will have “EST. 20049.” Don Miguel says they went to convenience stores in Texas, California, North Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Oregon, Washington and Arizona.
If you see the recalled burritos in your refrigerator or freezer, return them to the store for a refund. If you see them for sale at a convenience store, show the manager this article. Selling recalled items is illegal.
Questions about the recall can be answered by Don Miguel via the website or at 800-523-4635.
