43 ice cream bar flavors recalled throughout the Florida Keys after a state inspection
Marathon’s Paradise Flavors finished rectifying all the problems found in a state inspection when it recalled all 43 flavors of its ice cream bars sold in stores, restaurants and gas stations throughout the Florida Keys.
Wednesday, the day before the everybody-out-of-the-pool recall, Paradise got a “Met Inspection Requirements” from Florida Department of Agriculture Inspector Manuel Uribe. Uribe’s original Sept. 26 inspection found Paradise “using a sanitizing agent not manufactured to be used on utensils and food contact surfaces,” not having hand sanitizer at one hand washing station and no way to dry damp, just-washed hands at another handwashing sink.
But, what perhaps cost Paradise most was Uribe noticing food misbranding, as in “various flavors of ice cream bars are missing ingredients and sub-ingredients” including allergens milk, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy and food coloring additives.
That’s a dangerous omission — consequences uncomfortable to fatal — to someone with a milk allergy, peanut allergy, tree nut allergy, wheat allergy, soy allergy or a food coloring allergy.
Uribe brought a monsoon of 60 Stop Sale Orders down on the thousands of 4-ounce ice cream bars in the facility at 9601 Overseas Highway. Paradise issued the recall Thursday.
People who have the ice cream bars and no food allergies can carry on as normal. If there’s a chance the ice cream bars will be eaten by someone with a food allergy, return them to the store where they were bought or to Paradise for a full refund.
