Loungers still illegally being sold after recall and 2 more infant deaths, CPSC says

Two years and two infant deaths after The Boppy Company recalled three million baby loungers, the company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a reminder Tuesday not to use, buy or sell the loungers.

The selling part has been illegal since the September 2021 recall of the loungers sold in the United States and Canada as Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers.

Still, the reminder claims, the loungers have been for sale on various online marketplaces, including Facebook Marketplace, despite requests from Boppy and the CPSC. A Wednesday check of Facebook Marketplace found no loungers on sale with the Boppy brand in the name within a 500-mile radius of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or Miami.

Since the recall, two more infants have died in the loungers.

“In October 2021, an infant was reportedly placed on the lounger for sleep and then rolled underneath a nearby adult pillow,” the CPSC said. “The cause of death was positional asphyxia. In November 2021, an infant was placed on a Newborn Lounger in an adult bed with a parent and soft bedding and was later found deceased on the lounger. The cause of death was undetermined.

“CPSC continues to emphasize that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment.”

If you have the loungers and want a refund, reach out to Boppy either online or at 800-416-1355, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time.
