Recalls

300,000 bottles of Starbucks Frappucino got a low-key recall. Glass may be in the drink

One of the world’s leading snack-and-drink companies recalled 302,400 bottles of chilled coffee sold under one of the world’s leading coffee brands — and it was done quietly for three weeks.

Pepsico yanked 25,200 12-bottle cases of Starbucks Frappucino Vanilla Flavored Chilled Coffee Drink in 13.7-ounce bottles on Jan. 28. The FDA Enforcement Report says the reason was “Foreign object (glass).”

This covers lots with expiration dates: MAR 08 23; MAY 29 23; JUN 04 23; and JUN 10, 23. None of the bottles were sold at Starbucks locations, according to Pepsico.

Either return the coffee drink for a full refund or toss it. For questions about this recall, email Pepsico, call 800-433-2652 or call Starbucks at 800-211-8307.

The enforcement report also says under “Initial Notification of Consignee or Public” was “Letter.” The recall didn’t appear on the FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals & Safety Alerts page that compiles press releases and public notices companies make about recalls. There was nothing on the Pepsico site or on the company’s Twitter or Instagram pages.

How low key was this recall? Consider Walmart, the nation’s largest grocery seller. Walmart’s recall announcements usually link to the FDA or USDA posting or the company’s announcement on its own site.

But when Walmart listed this on its product recall page on Saturday with a 16-page PDF of Walmart and Sam’s Club stores that might’ve received the recalled frappucino, it had to hyperlink to a Friday report by San Francisco’s KABC-TV.
