A Florida company’s cookies recalled from Publix for a possibly ‘life-threatening’ error

Sarasota cookie maker Sotto i Trulli aka Bombolo Biscotti recalled cookies from five Publix stores after a packaging mistake created a food allergy danger.

The cookies in 16-ounce plastic clamshells labeled “Assorted Italian Cookies” with UPC code No. 852158002272, lot No. 092222 and expiration date 04/05/2023 are actually Italian Wedding Cookies. Aside from the different taste, the Italian Wedding Cookies have walnuts, an allergen not declared on the packaging.

That’s a minor annoyance for most people, but as the Bombolo-written, FDA-posted recall notice says: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnut allergen run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

These went to Publix stores in Atlanta; McLeansville, North Carolina; and the Florida cities of Deerfield Beach, Orlando and Lakeland (Publix’s hometown).

The notice says: “Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.”

If there’s any chance someone with a walnut allergy will eat these cookies, take them back to the store of purchase for a full refund. If you have any questions, call Bombolo at 941-752-6700.
