Guacamole and salsa among 25 recalled items sold at Kroger after listeria was found
Listeria caused 25 ready-to-eat food items to be recalled from Kroger stores in three states.
Atlanta-area company GHGB said in its Tuesday recall notice, posted by the FDA, that on Friday it learned “that a single sample of a product tested positive for listeria monocytogenes.”
Listeria kills about 260 of the 1,600 Americans infected each year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Senior citizens, pregnant women and children under 5 are the most vulnerable to listeria’s worse effects. Listeria can cause stillbirths and miscarriage. Listeria symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, high fever, severe headaches, stomachaches, stiffness, confusion and poor balance.
The list of products in the recall notice includes salsa, guacamole, vegetable kabobs, “Hamburger Fixins,” pico de gallo, Mexican style bean dip, diced onions and similar foods. They were sold in clear, plastic containers mostly in the produce or deli sections of Kroger stores in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.
All the products recalled had expiration dates of Thursday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday. But the concern is they could be in customer’s refrigerators.
