Listeria in a Miami company’s smoked salmon causes a recall in New York, 9 other states

One lot of St. James Smokehouse brand’s Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon (Product of Scotland) in 4-ounce packs has been recalled after listeria was found in the finished product.

St. James Smokehouse is based in North Miami-Dade, about a mile west of Miami proper, but the company’s recall notice, posted to the FDA site, says the listeria was found at the opposite corner of the contiguous United States by Washington’s Department of Agriculture. The recalled lot, No. 123172, went to Florida, Washington, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Listeria kills about 260 of the 1,600 Americans infected each year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Senior citizens, pregnant women and children under 5 are the most vulnerable to listeria’s worse effects. Listeria can cause stillbirths and miscarriage. Listeria symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, high fever, severe headaches, stomachaches, stiffness, confusion and poor balance.

If you have the recalled smoked salmon, throw it out or return it to the store for a full refund.

If you have questions about the recall, call 305-461-0231, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time.
