Listeria found in 16 ice cream flavors made by Big Olaf Creamery, state says. Here’s the list
A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) released a statement Friday on their current findings which link the recent Listeria outbreak to Big Olaf ice cream products.
The department said, 16 out of 17 ice cream flavor samples they tested last week at the Big Olaf production facility in Sarasota came back positive for listeria.
Flavors include:
Blueberry Cheesecake
Butter Pecan
Cherry Cordial
Chocolate
Chocolate Chip
Coconut
Coconut Almond Joy
Cookie Dough
Cookies & Cream
Kahlua Krunch
Mint Chip
Pistachio
Plantation Praline
Superman
Vanilla
White Chocolate Raspberry
Based on the results, FDACS will issue a formal stop-sale for the 16 flavors that were already cited in the voluntary recall on Wednesday.
“Our department continues to work closely with our state and federal partners on this investigation and enforcement of the stop sale,” Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokesperson Erin Moffet said in an email.
A total of 100 environmental samples were also taken at the production facility, 10 of which tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The CDC has confirmed 23 illnesses in the listeria outbreak connected to Big Olaf, including 22 people who were hospitalized and one death reported from Illinois. The CDC says five people became ill while pregnant, including one who had a miscarriage.
Listeria is a bacteria that can be carried in food products and cause mild to serious illness. Serious infections, called listeriosis, can lead to hospitalization, miscarriages, and death.
FDACS is unable to comment further on the situation at this time, as their investigation is still ongoing.
