Why 367,000 refrigerators are being recalled as choking hazards after a gum laceration

Refrigerators are supposed to freeze and chill — and not cause physical injury. That’s why Electrolux on Thursday recalled about 367,000 refrigerators sold under the Electrolux and Frigidaire brands.

The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The ice level detector arm in the ice maker can break into pieces and fall into the ice bucket, posing a choking hazard.”

The notice says Electrolux knows of the detector arm breaking in 185 models, “including one report of gum lacerations.”
