230 pounds of smoked fish has been recalled after listeria discovered

About 230 pounds of Turbot Cold Smoked sold under the Haifa Smoked Fish & Caviar brand has been recalled after routine testing uncovered listeria.

According to the company-written, FDA-posted recall notice, the New York State Department of Agriculture found the listeria when doing routine sample testing. Haifa’s alert says it’s still investigating how listeria got into its turbot.

The recalled 8-ounce packs carry lot No. 246, which can be found on the back of the gold board on which the turbot is packaged. They went to stores in New York and New Jersey.

Customers with this turbot should return it to the store of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can call Haifa at 718-523-8899, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time.

Listeria kills about 260 of the 1,600 Americans infected each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. In addition to senior citizens and children under five being the most vulnerable to salmonella’s worst effects, add pregnant women. They can suffer stillbirths and miscarriage. Listeria symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, high fever, severe headaches, stomachaches, stiffness, confusion and poor balance.
