A packaging error turned one lot of Howling Cow Butter Almond Ice Cream into a food allergy bomb.

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association recalled the lot, 8,040 pints with a sell by date of Sept. 15, 2022, because they heard from consumers that instead of Butter Almond, those pint containers had Cookie Dough flavor ice cream.

That’s an annoyance, at worst, for most people, and others would just dive in anyway. But Cookie Dough flavor has soy and wheat while Butter Almond doesn’t. So, those allergens aren’t be listed on the container.

Howling Cow Butter Almond ice cream declares milk and almonds as included allergens. But that didn’t match the ice cream that’s in the recalled pints.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy or wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the Howling Cow Butter Almond Pints,” the company-written FDA-posted recall notice states.

The pints went to Harris Teeter supermarkets in the North Carolina and South Carolina area. If you or someone who might eat this ice cream has a soy or wheat allergy, toss out the ice cream or return it to the store for a full refund.

Those with questions can call 800-552-1976, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Eastern time.

Who makes Howling Cow?

The pints recalled declare Howling Cow “The Ice Cream of North Carolina State University” and the brand has a cult following in the Carolinas.

According to a North Carolina State university website, Howling Cow ice cream began as a research project in the 1940s, then became a dessert available only at campus cafeterias.

“True to its tasty roots, Howling Cow ice cream is still made on campus in the Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab, part of the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Science,” the site says. “The milk and cream come directly from over 300 NC State cows on our farm in Raleigh, North Carolina.”

But the Howling Cow made on campus is sold only on campus in stores and cafeterias. The Howling Cow sold in Harris Teeter stores is made at other North Carolina farms by Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative.
