Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz announced Thursday that he will run for Florida’s newly redrawn 25th Congressional District, setting the stage for one of the few competitive U.S. House races in Florida this November.

The district stretches from Miami Beach north to Delray Beach after changes approved under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ redistricting map, which kicked off a game of musical chairs in South Florida for Democratic incumbents like Moskowitz.

The district Moskowitz was elected to lead in 2024 was redrawn under the new map, which reduced the number of Florida congressional districts won by Democrat Kamala Harris in the last presidential election to four. Florida’s U.S. House delegation currently includes seven Democrats.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose district was also redrawn, chose to run in Florida’s 20th district, a safe blue seat, forcing her into a clash with other Democrats. Moskowitz chose to run in a district drawn to benefit Republicans, potentially allowing the Democratic Party to protect a House seat in November.

The Cook Political Report rates the district as a toss-up. Voter registration in the district shows 32.9% are Republicans and 31.2% are Democrats, while 35.9% are independent.

Several Republicans, including former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer and former Broward County GOP Chairman George Moraitis, have filed paperwork to campaign for the seat. A spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee predicted Moskowitz will lose.

“We wish him well as he prepares to shift his focus to growing his sneaker collection and landing a talk show on MS NOW,” said NRCC Spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole.

A Broward County native, Moskowitz is campaigning on a platform of restoring normalcy to American politics and pushing back against the growing rise of political extremism.

Notably, about 25% of voters in the newly drawn 25th Congressional District are Jewish, and Moskowitz has made combating antisemitism a key part of his campaign platform.

“I am only here because my grandparents escaped Europe in WWII,” he said in a statement announcing his campaign. “Because of good people who stood up to evil, my family was able to come to America and build a life in South Florida. So, when I see people in my own party talking about concentration camps or deporting Jews, I am going to be an immovable object to that movement.”

Moskowitz began his political career as a Parkland city commissioner before serving in the Florida House of Representatives. The two-term incumbent built a reputation for bipartisan collaboration and helped lead the legislative response following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

He later served as director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management under DeSantis, overseeing the state’s response to hurricanes, the COVID-19 pandemic and major disaster recovery efforts before being appointed to the Broward County Commission.

Moskowitz also said his campaign will focus on easing financial pressures on working families.

“The American people are struggling to afford a regular way of life,” he said in a statement, “We must work together to bring back the American dream for the middle class in America. I have never hesitated to work with anyone across the aisle if I think it’ll improve the lives of my constituents.”

This article has been updated to clarify that there are currently seven Democrats from Florida serving in Congress. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Florida Democrat elected to the U.S. House in 2024, resigned in April.
