We asked the two candidates where they stood on key issues facing the town. Here is how they responded:

CUTLER BAY COUNCILMEMBER - SEAT 2

Why are you running for office?

Suzy Lord: As the incumbent, my love for Cutler Bay and its residents drives me to continue serving. I’m dedicated to preserving our environment, ensuring sustainable development, and protecting the town’s charm while advocating for the community’s best interests.

Brook De Melo Gomes: I’m running for Council Seat 2 in Cutler Bay to bring a fresh, proactive voice. My platform focuses on accountability, transparency, and ensuring residents are heard, especially in major financial and infrastructure decisions. I’m committed to responsible development, public safety and accessibility, and environmental stewardship.

What makes you the best candidate for the position you are seeking?

Suzy Lord: With experience in local government, a proven record, and strong community ties, I’ve been endorsed by Community Newspapers and named a 2024 Miami-Dade County Woman of Impact. My integrity and commitment to Cutler Bay’s future are unshakable.

Brook De Melo Gomes: As an educator and administrator, I’m skilled in listening, observing, problem-solving, and crisis management. I will ask tough questions, foster accountability, and bring fresh ideas, unlike the incumbent’s passive approach. I’m committed to engaging with residents and making decisions that best serve our community’s needs.

What is the most pressing issue facing the community you wish to represent?

Suzy Lord: Preserving Cutler Bay’s character amid the $1.5 billion Southland Mall redevelopment is crucial. I also prioritize environmental protection, balanced development, affordable housing, financial transparency, and long-term economic sustainability for our town.

Brook De Melo Gomes: One pressing issue in the Town of Cutler Bay is financial responsibility with tax payer dollars, especially with the Legacy Park and Municipal Complex project. The $37 million bond was approved in 2022 and will raise property taxes over the next 30 years. Rising costs for Brownfield cleanup and design features must be controlled.
