House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Tuesday morning on the day of California’s primary, and hours after the Associated Press reported she had clinched the Democratic nomination.

In an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Pelosi said she had personally voted for Clinton and noted the historic accomplishment of a woman leading a major party ticket.

"We've had two men over and over again for hundreds of years," Pelosi said.

Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination a day early than expected Monday night, after reaching the threshold of 2,383 delegates needed to secure her party’s nod. Pelosi said she had delayed endorsing publicly because she is a superdelegate and “I think that the matter should be determined by the voters in the state.”

"I hasten to say that it's not over 'til it's over,” she said. “Californians haven't voted, nor have others in five states.”

Pelosi also released a statement on her endorsement, complimenting rival Sen. Bernie Sanders for the enthusiasm he’d generated among voters yet calling on them “to advance our shared fight.”

Sanders said Monday night that he intends to reassess his presidential bid after California’s primary but has signaled he intends to remain in the race until the Democratic National Convention in July.

Pelosi also suggested, when asked, that a female pick as Clinton’s vice president would be “fabulous” but added the choice is Clinton’s to make.

"I think that two women, whoever they may be, that would be fabulous as well but Hillary Clinton will choose the person that she feels most comfortable with,” she said.
