Here’s who qualified for the ballot in South Florida for state Senate and House
Three state senators and seven state representatives from South Florida are likely to run unopposed this year after the state’s candidate qualifying period closed Friday at noon.
In Miami-Dade County, GOP Reps. Bryan Avila and Ana Maria Rodriguez appear to have a smooth path to the state Senate, while in Broward County, Democratic incumbent Sens. Jason Pizzo and Rosalind Osgood — who was just elected in March during a special election — did not have any challengers who qualified.
State Sen. Lauren Book, the Florida Senate minority leader, is officially in a primary battle for SD-35 with former Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief in a closely watched primary that’s likely to get expensive — and personal.
In the state House, HD 119 drew seven candidates who filed, but only five have qualified so far. Among the two who haven’t is former Miami Congressman David Rivera, who made a surprise filing for office early Friday.
And in Florida’s southernmost House district, HD 120, incumbent Rep. Jim Mooney is facing a primary challenge from his former opponent Rhonda Rebman Lopez, a local GOP activist and businesswoman who lost against Mooney in 2020 in a close race.
Here’s who qualified to be on the ballot in the August 23 primary and the November 8 general election (if they have no primary opponent):
