Kamala Harris to visit Miami-Dade Thursday as Biden prepares for a return to Florida
Kamala Harris, running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, will visit Miami-Dade County Thursday along with her husband as the Biden campaign begins to increase its presence in battleground Florida.
Harris, a U.S. senator from California, is scheduled to appear at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens to host a “community conversation ... to discuss the challenges facing the African American community in South Florida,” according to the campaign. Miami Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Miami Shores Mayor Crystal Wagar — both supporters of Harris’ short-lived presidential campaign — are expected to attend.
Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, plans to visit with local rabbis, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Miami-Dade mayoral candidate Daniella Levine Cava at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center.
Both events are scheduled at 3 p.m.
The Biden campaign’s return to in-person events in Florida comes as polls show the race tightening ahead of the Nov. 3 election. A polling average on RealClearPolitics.com shows the former vice president up on Trump by 1.2% in Florida — essentially a toss-up.
Biden is scheduled to visit Florida on Sept. 15, his campaign announced Wednesday, his first visit since he accepted the Democratic nomination for president. It is not yet clear where in the state he will appear.
