KYIV, Ukraine - Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight, killing at least five and injuring dozens, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

He said that five people were killed in the city of Dnipro alone, with more than 40 injured and two still missing.

“Since last night, Russia has been terrorizing Dnipro with missile and drone attacks,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “Strikes have hit ordinary residential buildings, energy facilities, civilian sites.”

“During the day, the Russians once again attacked the same residential area they had struck overnight. There have been numerous casualties,” he added.

Air raid sirens sounded across the country with residents urged to seek shelter. Heavy explosions were also reported in Kharkiv, while other cities including Kyiv were also attacked.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia had launched cruise missiles alongside ballistic missiles and swarms of drones in an attempt to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses.

A total of 619 Russian drones as well as 47 missiles were fired, with Ukraine able to intercept 580 drones alongside most of the Kh-101 cruise missiles and Kalibr missiles used in the attacks, according to the air force.

Ukraine has been warding off a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.

Zelenskyy said it is important “that the world does not remain silent about what is happening and that this Russian war in Europe is not overshadowed by the war in Iran.”
