A climber died after he fell from a ridge in the United Kingdom, officials say.

The man was ascending the Gribin ridge on Saturday, Feb. 4, when a rock he was holding on to broke away, causing him to plummet a “considerable distance,” Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organization said in a Feb. 6 Facebook post. The climber died from his injuries, and his body was recovered on Sunday.

“The thoughts of all team members are with the [deceased’s] family and friends,” rescuers said.

Rescuer’s recovered the body on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The Gribin ridge is part of The Glyderau, a mountain group in Snowdonia, North Wales, about 110 miles southwest of Manchester.

Officials have not released the man’s identity, but social media posts from friends and family say the climber was Jack Carne.

“I am absolutely heartbroken,” Ann Birks, Carne’s girlfriend, commented on Facebook.

“We are all heartbroken [beyond] words,” Wendy Croft, Carne’s grandmother, wrote in a comment. “You will be forever in my heart and thoughts Jack my beautiful grandson.”

“Nicest lad you’ll ever meet gone too soon,” a friend wrote in a post.
