Eugenio Hernández Hernández, not pictured, the couple’s neighbor — All three were arrested on March 18, 2012 during a demonstration by government supporters who were trying to prevent them from taking part in an event commemorating the 2003 Black Spring crackdown on dissidents. They were charged with public disorder and attempted murder and Garro also faces the charge of using violent intimidation against a state official. Their trial had been postponed four times. Cuba’s public prosecutor said the men threw objects, including a television set, at state security agents. Chares are still pending.

Morera got eight years for various charges, including public disorder, assault* and disrespect, and Ramírez got four years. Morera, who was freed in Sept. 2014, went on a hunger strike at the Guamajal prison that lasted more than 100 days. *Cubans can be arrested for assault for resisting arrest.
