Video: Cuban police officers confront angry mob in Santiago de Cuba

An unusual confrontation between Cuban police and a mob of angry residents in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba over the weekend was captured on video that went viral.

According to independent press reports from the island, hundreds of people went after a man who allegedly raped a girl. The police had to escort the suspect out of the neighborhood. The incident happened on Saturday near the Agüero and José Martí District neighborhoods, the Diario de Cuba site reported.

The victim was reportedly transported to the hospital, according to the reports.

The video shows that the mob followed the alleged rapist, apparently to a friend’s house, in the Vista Alegre neighborhood. Heavy police presence prevented the man from being lynched, even as some people in the crowd threw rocks.

Shouts of “We want justice,” in Spanish could be heard in several videos shared on social media.

According to the independent press reports, the child attended a birthday party and then was picked up by a family friend, who is accused of sexual abuse.
