Wilmington Hospital Shooting: What We Know as Public Asked to Avoid Area
Police responded to reports of a shooting at a hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, Tuesday afternoon.
Initial reports from the scene suggested a shooting had occurred within the ChristianaCare site on the 500 block of West 14th Street, with the Wilmington Police Department asking the public to avoid the area.
A police department dispatcher told Newsweek the scene and investigation remained active.
In a statement to Newsweek, the hospital told Newsweek that the campus was on lockdown and the emergency department on divert.
“We are working closely with law enforcement and taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors. This is an active police investigation for a possible active shooter,” the statement read.
Shooting at Wilmington Hospital: What We Know
Reports of the shooting first appeared around 4:10 p.m. ET Tuesday.
As of 4:50 p.m. ET, little detail was available on the number of potential injuries or the suspect.
At about 4:30 p.m., dozens of police officers, including some in tactical gear, converged outside the main and emergency room entrances at the hospital, the Delaware News Journal reported.
The outlet also said a woman had been taken away from the scene in handcuffs.
Where is ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital?
Wilmington PD said the incident occurred at the hospital on the 500 block of West 14th Street in the city, which sits just northwest of the downtown area.
The hospital has 321 beds across a 622,100-square-foot facility.
In January 2021, then President Elect Joe Biden received his second COVID-19 vaccine at the site.
Hospital Campus on Lockdown
The hospital said it was on lockdown while the investigation remained ongoing.
“At this time, we are actively gathering information and will provide updates as soon as more details are confirmed. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of everyone on our campus and the continuity of care for our patients,” Wilmington Hospital said in a statement to Newsweek.
