Nancy Guthrie Update: Police Increase Neighborhood Patrols After Complaints

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has reportedly increased patrols in Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood following complaints from neighbors.

The investigation into the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie is continuing for a third month, with no sign of her since she was reported missing in early February despite a massive search.

News 4 Tucson reported on Monday that the sheriff’s department has increased patrols in Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood after neighbors reported being harassed by YouTubers.

The Context

Guthrie was last seen at her home outside Tucson, Arizona, on January 31 and reported missing on February 1 by her family. Authorities believe she was kidnapped and said drops of her blood were found on the front porch.

In February, the FBI released surveillance footage from a doorbell camera, showing a masked man, whom they called a suspect, outside Guthrie’s front door on the night she disappeared. Since then, investigators have neither identified a suspect nor provided details of any significant breakthroughs in the case.

What To Know

News 4 Tucson reported that residents in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood complained about a YouTuber harassing them during a recent homeowners’ association meeting. The sheriff’s department told the outlet that it also received similar complaints from Annie Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter.

As a result, patrols have been increased in both Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood and in the neighborhood in Tucson where Annie Guthrie lives with her husband.

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer told Newsweek that residents can often differ in their views on the presence of news reporters and social media influencers in such cases.

“You’re going to have some that are neutral, some that don’t like the disturbance and YouTubers and being asked questions and harassed, if you will,” she said.

“Then you’re gonna have others that support them because they think, well, at least this keeps the eyes on Nancy Guthrie.

“But to me, the fact that the Pima County Sheriff’s Office is going to increase patrols and, I think, make sure that any YouTubers or streamers that exist are going to keep their distance and protect these neighbors, it tells me that the neighborhood as a whole is more upset and they don’t want the YouTubers around.”
