A man and a woman have been accused of elder abuse after a Florida Department of Children and Families investigation found they denied a woman food and changed the name on her home’s deed.

In July, a report was made to the agency alleging a woman was being abused by her caretakers, according to an Oct. 31 Facebook post from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Her caretakers were identified as Enrique Junior Navedo, 43, and Loy Lynn La Pierre, 58.

A second report was received in October, with “concerns about the victim’s mental and physical health,” deputies said.

The woman told investigators she had been denied food by her caretakers and wasn’t allowed to move freely around her house, according to deputies. The woman wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom inside and had to go outdoors, and she was made to shower in a tent outside, authorities said.

She had only a garden hose with cold water, deputies said.

“Detectives later learned the victim suffered from a chronic untreated wound that exposed internal tissue and bone, as well as numerous other medical conditions caused by prolonged neglect,” deputies said.

While the alleged abuse was going on, deputies say Navedo transferred the ownership of the woman’s home into his name using a Quit Claim Deed.

However, the documents were backdated and “filed more than a year after its alleged signing,” deputies said.

Navedo was charged with fraud-swindle-obtain property for $50,000 or more and abuse of an elderly or disabled adult without great bodily harm. Pierre was charged with abuse of an elderly or disabled adult without great bodily harm.

Both were taken into custody on Oct. 31 and Navedo is held without bond.

If you suspect an elder adult or an adult with disabilities has experienced, is currently experiencing, or is at risk of experiencing abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or financial exploitation, your first step should be to contact the appropriate agency.
