A man died after being mauled by his pet dogs, Texas officials said.

On Oct. 12, Galveston County deputies responded to a Bacliff home and found one of the man’s pit bull dogs latched to his arm, according to a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office.

Bystanders told deputies they saw the man’s two dogs attacking him in his yard, the sheriff’s office said.

After seeing the dog attacking the man’s arm, an officer fired his gun, hitting the dog and causing it to retreat to a corner of the yard, deputies said.

The victim was transported to a hospital while CPR was in progress, and was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Officers will release the victim’s identity when his family is notified, officials said.

The dogs were put in animal control’s custody, officials said.

Bacliff is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Houston.
