Two dogs were ‘left to die’ in house. Then came daring rescue in Pennsylvania
Two dogs who were very close to death are on the mend at a Philadelphia shelter thanks to some determined animal law enforcement officers.
The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has taken in a lot of horrific cases when it comes to animal abuse, but recently they came into one that was especially heartbreaking.
“Two dogs. Same house. Both left to die,” the shelter said in an Oct. 10 Facebook post.
“When our Animal Law Enforcement Officers arrived at a Philadelphia property, they found Little Bailey alone in a backyard — so emaciated she could barely move, struggling even to bark. Large bowls of dry food sat untouched. There was no water. She was panting heavily and collapsing under her own weight.”
The officers could see that the little pup was knocking at death’s door, so they jumped the fence in order to get to her, the shelter said.
“What they found broke their hearts. Bailey was so weak she couldn’t walk. Her body was covered in wounds, scabs, and abrasions. Like so many neglected animals, she had been left outside to suffer and die,” the shelter said.
“But the horror at this property wasn’t over.”
Officers found another disturbing scene the following day, when they were called back to the property during an eviction.
“That’s when they made a devastating discovery: hidden in the basement, locked in a crate and covered in feces and urine, was another dog. Faith,” the shelter said.
“She was so emaciated and weak that she couldn’t move. Our officer had to carry her limp body out of that dark basement and rush her to safety,” according to the shelter. “Faith’s body was covered in feces. A soiled collar hung loose around her neck — a haunting reminder of how much weight she had lost.”
Like Bailey, Faith suffered from multiple, life threatening conditions, including a damaged right leg that had to be removed. The shelter said that both pups are fighters, and after their rescues, they proved just how strong they are.
“Today, after round-the-clock care, IV fluids, blood transfusions, medications, and small frequent meals, both girls are healing. Faith is learning to walk on three legs. Bailey is gaining strength every single day,” the shelter said.
“They’re discovering what it feels like to be clean, fed, and loved. Their tails are wagging and their eyes are brighter. They’re becoming the happy dogs they were always meant to be.”
The shelter has been providing updates on both dogs, including posts about Bailey, and a video of Faith adapting to life with a missing leg.
