Two teens, possibly subway surfing, found dead on top of train, NY officials say
Two teen girls were found dead on top of a New York subway in what officials are calling a possible subway surfing incident, news outlets report.
Police were called a little after 3 a.m. Oct. 4 for reports of two unconscious girls, according to The National News Desk.
The two girls were found dead on the roof of a J train that was coming into the Marcy Avenue station in New York City, the news outlet reported.
Officials said one of the girls was 13 years old, according to WABC.
“It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game,” Demetrius Crichlow, the president of NYC Transit, said in a statement to WBTS.
Subway surfing is when people ride on top or hang from the sides of trains while they’re running, The National News Desk reported.
Police said three people had died from subway surfing this year as of Aug. 31, before the girls’ deaths, WABC reported. At least 52 subway surfing rescues have been made this year, officials said.
“Parents, teachers, and friends need to be clear with loved ones: getting on top of a subway car isn’t ‘surfing’ — it’s suicide. I’m thinking of both the grieving families, and transit workers who discovered these children, all of whom have been horribly shaken by this tragedy,” Crichlow told WBTS.
The identities of the two girls have not been released.
