Lonely cat at Indiana shelter ‘hasn’t lost hope.’ He wants someone to ‘see him’

In a shelter environment, there are shy animals, loud animals, snoozing animals, the works. And then there are the ones who want nothing more than to be loved by humans.

Gene, a young cat at an Indiana shelter, wants all the love a person can muster.

“Found as a stray, this handsome kitty’s history is a mystery to us. What we do know is that he’s ready to write a brand new chapter with someone special,” the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers said in a Sept. 17 Facebook post.

“I visited Gene today, and it was clear: he’s lonely, but he hasn’t lost hope. As soon as I approached his kennel, he looked up with the softest, most curious eyes and greeted me a happy purr and gentle head-butts. (He’s a big fan of ear scratches, just a heads up!)”

It’s hard to ignore that little face, so it’s puzzling why the 2-year-old domestic shorthair is overlooked at the shelter.

“He even showed me a pretty impressive trick, rolling over proudly to show off all his toe beans in a big stretch. Maybe it was his way of saying, ‘Look what I can do!’ Or maybe he was basking in his little moment (of) affection from a loving human,” the shelter said.

“Gene isn’t asking ask for much, just someone to see him, to love him, and to give him the warmth of a home he’s never experienced before. His striking eyes and sweet little face are impossible to forget, but it’s his gentle spirit that stays with you.”

Fishers is about a 20-mile drive northeast from downtown Indianapolis.
