A father told the mother of his 22-month-old child that the boy “didn’t look right” during a custody exchange shortly before the child’s fentanyl death, Colorado prosecutors say.

Now, a Douglas County jury found Hanna Gilmour, 29, guilty of “felony child abuse resulting in death and misdemeanor child abuse,” the Colorado District Attorney’s 23rd Judicial District said in a Sept. 12 news release.

Attorney information for Gilmour was not immediately available.

“This was a senseless and preventable tragedy,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Jake Adkins said in the release. “Every parent has a responsibility to protect their child. Instead, their mother created an environment so dangerous that it cost her son his life.”

The boy’s father arrived at Gilmour’s apartment in Littleton to pick up his son for a custody exchange in November 2022, prosecutors said.

At the time, the father told Gilmour the boy “didn’t look right,” according to the district attorney’s office.

Gilmour laughed, officials said, adding that she told the father “the toddler was just sleeping.”

After driving to his mother’s home minutes away, the father realized his son was not breathing, prosecutors said.

The father called 911, and the boy was later pronounced dead, officials said

Investigators learned that the apartment Gilmour shared with her boyfriend “was littered with illegal substances- including cocaine, mushrooms, marijuana and fentanyl,” prosecutors said, adding that they believe the boy was crawling on the floor when he “ingested fentanyl, leading to his death.”

“There are no winners here. A beautiful, innocent child is gone,” District Attorney George Brauchler said in the release. “Even after (Gilmour) knew her son’s health was in jeopardy, she chose self-preservation over saving her boy.”

Gilmour is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing Nov. 12 and “faces between 16 and 48 years in prison,” prosecutors said.

Littleton is about a 10-mile drive south from Denver.
