Couple climbs through sunroof to rescue screaming child from hot car, MA cops say
A couple climbed through a sunroof to rescue a 22-month-old screaming child left alone in a hot car, Massachusetts police said.
Officers responded to a Whole Foods parking lot on Sept. 1 after getting reports of a child left alone in a hot car, according to a Facebook post by the Hingham Police Department.
The child’s 44-year-old mom was shopping in several stores when a couple parked next to her car heard a child screaming for their mom, prompting them to call 911, police said.
The child was in a car seat in the back seat of the car, with the engine off and the doors locked, officers said.
The car’s sunroof was open, so the couple climbed through the sunroof, unlocked the doors, and rescued the child, officers said.
When police got to the scene they found the child “hot and profusely sweating,” and officers put the child in the front seat of their air-conditioned car, officials said. Paramedics took the child to a hospital by ambulance, police said.
When the mom got back to the car, she told officers the child had been napping and she had checked on the child while shopping, police said.
The outside temperature was 73 degrees, but heatstroke can occur when outside temperatures are below 70 , police said.
Police didn’t provide information about the child’s condition.
The mom is facing a charge of reckless endangerment of a child, police said.
Hingham is about a 20-mile drive southeast from Boston.
