Man with 3 wives could have even more as part of financial scams, NC sheriff says
Three wives in three counties may just be the start for a man facing felony bigamy charges in North Carolina, investigators say.
Harry Irvine Burdick Jr. is accused of engaging in bigamy for “financial motivation and personal gain,” the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 28 news release.
“We believe there could additional victims for this investigation,” the sheriff’s office says. “If you or someone you know has been legally married without a divorce to Mr. Burdick, please contact ... the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.”
Investigators have not revealed how Burdick gained financially from the marriages.
He is 60 and lives in the Davidson County city of Thomasville, the High Point Enterprise reports.
Accusations of bigamy surfaced against him in April, and the resulting investigation revealed “three marriage licenses with three different women,” officials said.
“All three marriages took place in North Carolina, in Lincoln County, Davidson County, and Guilford County,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Detectives were unable to locate divorce proceedings before Mr. Burdick had already married two other women.”
Burdick was arrested Aug. 22 and faces two counts of felony bigamy, officials said. He was released “on a written promise to appear in court” on Sept. 22, officials said.
Davidson County is about a 65-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
Potential victims can call 336-236-3365 to speak with an investigator at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
