A hiker near a scenic overlook had to be rescued after falling down a mountain on a historic hiking path, New Hampshire officials said.

On Aug. 16, New Hampshire Fish and Game officers got reports of a hiker having slipped and fallen between 50 feet and 100 feet down Mount Pierce while she was hiking Crawford Path, according to a news release by the department.

Crawford Path is a scenic trail that’s considered “the oldest, continuously maintained” path in the country, according the U.S. Forest Service. Built in the 1800s, it was originally used as a horse trail to the summit of Mount Washington.

The hiker was later identified as Meghan Mason of Braintree, Massachusetts, officials said.

After her fall, Mason was in “rugged terrain” so extra help was called to get her to safety, officials said.

Volunteers carried Mason down the trailhead and she was transported to a hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening but serious injuries, officials said.

Mount Pierce is about a 100-mile drive northeast from Concord.
