A 26-year-old was injured in a fall while climbing a mountain at a Colorado national park, rangers say.

Rocky Mountain National Park rangers got a report of a climber who had been injured in a roped fall on the south face of Petit Grepon, leaving his lower legs injured, the morning of Sunday, Aug. 17, the National Park Service said in a news release.

His climbing partner helped him rappel to the base of their route, where they were met by park rangers.

As park rangers provided medical care to the climber, officials said its search and rescue litter team trekked to the base of Timberline Falls carrying equipment in the event it was needed for a rope rescue, officials said.

A Colorado Army National Guard helicopter arrived at about 3 p.m. to hoist the man from the area, rangers said.

Rescuers flew the man from the park for further medical care, according to rangers.

Petit Grepon, which has a summit of 12,001 feet, is among the 50 North American Classic rock climbs, according to Colorado Mountain School.

The “classic route” typically takes between 8 to 12 hours to complete, Colorado Mountain School said.

Rocky Mountain National Park is about a 70-mile drive northwest from Denver.
