A Pennsylvania woman was arrested after officials say they found her 3-year-old daughter and family dog dead in a car in Maine.

Kelly Brown, 40, is charged with manslaughter, according to an Aug. 11 news release from Maine State Police.

Attorney information for Brown was not available.

Brown was in Maine visiting family with her daughter, Fiona, and 13-year-old dog, Penelope, WCSH reported. Family members reported Brown and Fiona missing on Aug. 7 after several days went by without hearing from her, according to the news outlet.

Family members told police Brown had been hallucinating and hearing voices, WCSH reported.

On Aug. 9, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a business in Milford and found Fiona dead in a car, according to officials. The family dog was also found dead with the girl, WMTW reported.

When police spoke to Brown, she told them she had been camping in the car with her daughter and went to throw trash away when she was swept away in the Penobscot River, WMTW reported. However, police noted that when she returned the car, she was not wet and her explanation didn’t match surveillance footage, according to WCSH.

Surveillance footage showed Brown left the car, with the windows rolled up, at 5:56 a.m. and didn’t return until 8:30 p.m., while officers were there, according to WCAU.

Fiona and Penelope both died from excessive heat, a medical examiner determined, according to the news outlet.
