Protestor hurls cinderblock chunk, injuring border patrol officer in CA, feds say
A man is accused of hurling cinderblock chunks and injuring a border patrol officer during an anti-immigration enforcement demonstration in the Los Angeles area, federal prosecutors said.
Jacob Daniel Terrazas, 30, was indicted Aug. 5 after being identified out of a group of people accused of throwing “hard objects” toward federal agents during a June 7 demonstration, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said in an Aug. 7 news release.
McClatchy News reached out to Terrazas’ attorney Aug. 8 but did not receive an immediate response.
The protest was held in response to an immigration enforcement operation that happened the day prior in Los Angeles, but it soon turned violent, according to an affidavit.
For three hours, multiple people ran back and forth from a “makeshift shield” and trees they were using for cover while throwing cinderblock chunks at the agents, prosecutors said.
One of the border patrol agents was hit by a piece of cinderblock Terrazas threw, causing his left shin to bleed, according to prosecutors.
Terrazas was taken into custody shortly after, prosecutors said.
“We will not stand by while our brave federal agents and officers get hurt,” Acting US Attorney Bill Essayli said in the release.
Terrazas is set to be seen in court Sep. 23 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors said.
