Two people are dead and one person is injured after a late-night home invasion in Virginia, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a call about an armed intruder just before midnight Aug. 3 at a home in Rockingham County, about a 140-mile drive northwest from Richmond, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 5 news release.

When they arrived, they found two people, including the intruder, dead, deputies said.

According to an investigation, 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker broke into the home and stabbed a woman with a large knife, killing her, deputies said. She was identified as 62-year-old Holly Hatcher, a resident of the home, according to deputies.

Then, Walker tried to attack Hatcher’s husband but was shot dead after the husband was able to reach his handgun, deputies said.

Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson called the incident “highly unusual,” “violent and tragic.” He said the investigation is still ongoing and no charges would be filed.

The sheriff’s office did not say if the intruder knew the couple.
