A correctional officer at an Alabama prison is accused of smuggling drugs into the facility, officials said.

Lt. Calvin Bush, who worked at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, was arrested and charged after authorities found a large amount of narcotics July 31 at a home in Odenville, the Alabama Department of Corrections said in an Aug. 2 news release.

Bush’s arrest is part of a larger ongoing investigation targeted at “individuals suspected of trafficking illegal substances/contraband” into the facility, officials said.

Authorities found 19 pounds of marijuana, about 9 pounds of methamphetamine, 100 grams of crack cocaine and 156 cellphones, along with other narcotics, according to officials.

In a related search, 2.5 more pounds of weed and 60 grams of meth were confiscated, officials said.

Bush was placed on mandatory leave pending dismissal, officials said.

He is being held at the St. Clair County Jail on a bond of more than $3 million, WBRC and WIAT reported.

Springville is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Birmingham.
