Man grabs woman at subway station, NY cops say. Video shows riders stop attack
A 20-year-old woman was followed to a subway station in Brooklyn by a man who is then accused of grabbing her and attacking her when she started walking away, police said.
Several men on the subway platform intervened in response to her screams, then physically stopped the assault, a video of the incident shared to TikTok shows.
Toward the end of the clip circulating TikTok, the subway riders appear to beat the man after subduing him.
The man, Fredrick Marshall, 42, of Queens, was arrested on charges of third-degree assault, second-degree harassment and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the June 29 incident, a New York City Police Department spokesperson confirmed to McClatchy News on July 7.
Information on Marshall’s legal representation was not immediately available.
According to police, Marshall followed the 20-year-old woman to the Manhattan bound “J” platform of the Norwood Avenue subway station in Cypress Hills, a neighborhood of Brooklyn, and “began verbally disputing with (her)” the morning of June 29.
Marshall grabbed her when she tried to get away, then “pushed her to the ground” as she tried escaping him “a second time,” the NYPD said in a statement.
In the TikTok video, the woman is heard screaming as Marshall appears to hold onto her, capturing the attention of nearby subway goers. The footage shows Marshall’s arms wrapped around the woman from behind.
A few men are seen walking over to Marshall, who is wearing white clothing and a white hat. One is heard shouting “let her go.”
After the woman is initially released from his grasp, the video shows Marshall charging toward the woman as bystanders come to her defense. Then he is seen chasing after the woman.
Shortly afterward, Marshall is seen on the ground on top of the woman.
The NYPD said in its statement that “a physical altercation ensued and multiple bystanders intervened to pull the female away from (Marshall).”
The video shows the subway riders piling onto Marshall and subduing him, with some appearing to punch him. Then the woman is seen getting up and away from Marshall.
The woman had “minor injuries to her stomach and arms” and reported her shoulder hurt, the NYPD said.
She received medical treatment from first responders, according to police, who confirmed Marshall was taken into custody.
He was armed with a knife and a blackjack weapon, the NYPD said.
One TikTok user commented on the TikTok video, saying “He wasn’t even scared with 10 men around her.”
“Imagine if it was at night time and she was alone,” the comment with more than 186,000 likes added.
