A teenager shot and killed a 28-year-old accused of assaulting a woman in an apartment, Alabama police said.

Officers responded to the shooting after 5 a.m. June 30 at an apartment in Dothan, the police department said in a news release.

When they arrived, they found that a man, identified as Johnny Oliver, had been fatally shot, police said.

According to an investigation, Oliver was assaulting a family member of the teen and ignored the teen’s demands to stop, police said.

Then, the teen took a gun Oliver brought to the home and fired one shot, hitting him in the upper torso and killing him, according to police.

Police did not name the teen or the woman.

Witnesses said the teen shot at Oliver to defend the woman, and criminal charges are not expected, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Dothan is about a 110-mile drive southeast from Montgomery.
