An Alabama man was arrested and charged in connection with the death of his wife after he was accused of hitting her with a car during an argument, deputies said.

Deputies responded to an emergency call at about 9:50 p.m. June 22 in New Market, about a 15-mile drive northeast from Huntsville, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 23 news release.

Maria Silos, 31, was found with “injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle,” deputies said. She was taken to a hospital where she died, the sheriff’s office said.

According to an investigation, Silos was driving a car with her husband, 45-year-old Garland Lockwood, when she pulled over to the shoulder during an argument, deputies said.

The couple continued fighting outside the car, then Lockwood “took control” of the car and hit Silos with it, according to deputies.

Lockwood is charged with murder — domestic violence and was taken to the Madison County Jail without bond, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to deputies.

“The Madison County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms. Silos. This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence,” the sheriff’s office said.
