A 22-year-old woman was ambushed and fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend after deputies left her apartment, Louisiana authorities said.

Kayelyn Ford told deputies on a phone call May 19 she thought her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Brandon Bell, was trying to use an old key to break into her apartment, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Authorities searched her apartment at about 3:30 a.m. and left when they didn’t find anyone, according to the sheriff’s office. Ford told them she and a friend planned to stay somewhere else.

But after deputies left, Bell came out of a wooded area and shot her as she was leaving the apartment , the sheriff’s office said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Deputies said Bell was taken to a hospital with self-inflicted injuries.

“He is not expected to make it,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.

The investigation is ongoing, deputies said.
